Airsoft Magazine FAQ
Airsoft Magazine FAQ – Capacity, Compatibility & Types
Answers about airsoft magazine capacity, compatibility across WE models, gas vs CO2 mags, and extended magazines.
How many BBs does a standard WE pistol magazine hold?
Standard capacities: 1911 (15 rounds), Hi-Capa (30 rounds), M9 (25–28 rounds depending on version), P226 (25 rounds), PX4 (25 rounds). Extended magazines are available for most models, typically adding 15–20 extra rounds.
What is the difference between standard and extended magazines?
Extended magazines are longer, holding more BBs and more gas. Benefits: fewer reloads, more shots per gas fill. Drawbacks: added weight, protrudes from the grip, less realistic appearance. Standard magazines are better for realism; extended for practicality.
How do I fill a green gas magazine?
Hold the magazine upside down, insert the green gas can nozzle firmly into the fill valve, and press down for 3–5 seconds. You'll hear gas flowing. Stop when you hear overflow/spraying back. Don't overfill — it wastes gas and can cause issues.
How do I insert a CO2 cartridge into a magazine?
Unscrew the base plate or cartridge cap, drop in a 12g CO2 cartridge (narrow end first), then tighten. The tightening punctures the cartridge seal. You'll hear a brief hiss — this is normal. Ensure the seal is tight to prevent slow leaks.
Why does my magazine only shoot a few rounds before running out of gas?
Possible causes: (1) underfilled — fill for a full 5 seconds, (2) leaking seal — apply silicone oil to valves, (3) cold weather reducing gas pressure, (4) worn seals needing replacement. A healthy magazine should empty its full BB load on one fill.
Should I store magazines with gas in them?
Yes, store with a small amount of gas (1-second fill). This keeps the seals pressurized and prevents them from drying out and cracking. Never store completely empty or fully charged for long periods.
How often should magazine seals be replaced?
With regular use and proper silicone oil maintenance, seals last 1–2 years. Signs of wear: persistent leaking despite oiling, reduced shot count per fill, visible cracking on O-rings. Replacement seal kits are inexpensive and easy to install.
What is the purpose of the follower in a magazine?
The follower is the spring-loaded platform that pushes BBs upward into the feed lips. If BBs don't feed properly, check that the follower moves freely and the spring isn't weakened or kinked.
Can I leave BBs loaded in magazines long-term?
It's fine for short periods (days), but for long-term storage (weeks+), unload BBs to relieve spring tension. Constant compression weakens the follower spring over time, leading to feeding issues.
What's the difference between WE and aftermarket magazine brands?
WE OEM magazines are designed for optimal fit and gas efficiency in WE guns. Aftermarket brands may offer higher capacity or lower prices but can have fitment or seal quality variations. For reliability, OEM is the safest choice.
How do I clean a gas magazine?
Disassemble (remove base plate), wipe the exterior with a dry cloth, apply a drop of silicone oil to the fill valve and release valve O-rings, check the feed lips for cracks, reassemble. Do this every few months or after playing in dusty/muddy conditions.
Why is gas spraying out when I fill my magazine?
A brief spray-back when you remove the can is normal (excess gas escaping). Continuous spraying during filling means the fill valve seal is damaged or the can nozzle isn't seated properly. Try a different angle; if it persists, replace the fill valve O-ring.
Can I use silicone oil spray directly into the magazine?
Yes, but sparingly. A short burst into the fill valve every few fills helps condition seals. Don't overdo it — excess oil can migrate into the hop-up and barrel, affecting accuracy. A drop on the valve O-rings is sufficient.
What are drum magazine adapters?
Some drum magazines use an adapter that replaces the standard magazine, connecting a high-capacity drum (100+ rounds) to the gun. These are popular for sustained fire but add significant weight and bulk.
How many magazines should I carry for a game?
For pistol-primary play: 3–4 magazines minimum. For pistol as secondary: 2 magazines is usually enough. Each magazine holds 15–30 rounds depending on the model, so plan based on your play style and game length.
Are there speed loaders for pistol magazines?
Yes. Universal pistol speed loaders can fill a magazine in seconds by pouring BBs into a reservoir and cranking. Much faster than loading BBs one by one. Essential for efficient reloads between games.
What's the lifespan of a gas magazine?
With proper maintenance, 2–5 years of regular use. The most common failure points are seals and feed lips, both replaceable. The magazine body itself rarely fails unless dropped on hard surfaces.
Why do my BBs double-feed or jam?
Double-feeding is usually caused by worn feed lips (the plastic tabs at the top of the magazine) or a weak follower spring. Inspect feed lips for spreading or cracks. Replacement followers and springs are available.
Can I convert a green gas magazine to CO2?
No. The internal valve system, seals, and pressure ratings are fundamentally different. Attempting conversion is unsafe and will damage the magazine. Purchase the correct gas type magazine for your needs.
What is a 'gas router' and when does it need replacing?
The gas router is the rubber nozzle at the top of the magazine that seals against the gun's loading nozzle during firing. If you experience weak blowback or gas venting from the ejection port, the gas router may be worn and need replacement.
How do temperature and altitude affect magazine performance?
Cold reduces gas pressure (fewer shots, weaker cycling). Heat increases pressure (more power but potential seal stress). High altitude has minimal effect on green gas/CO2. HPA is the most consistent across conditions.
What's the best way to transport magazines to a game?
Use a dedicated magazine pouch or padded case. Keep them with a small gas charge (not full, not empty). Avoid loose transport where feed lips can catch and break. Hard-shell cases offer the best protection.
Are transparent magazines available for WE pistols?
Some aftermarket brands offer translucent magazines, but WE OEM magazines are opaque metal. Transparent magazines look cool but can be less durable. For WE guns, stick with OEM for reliability.
How do I know if my magazine is compatible before buying?
Check three things: (1) brand match (WE magazines for WE guns), (2) model match (1911 mag for 1911 gun), (3) gas type match (green gas vs CO2). When in doubt, check the product description on Airgrix or contact customer service.
What causes a magazine to vent all its gas at once?
Sudden full venting is usually caused by a stuck or damaged release valve, or extreme cold causing seal contraction. Remove the magazine, let it warm up, apply silicone oil to valves. If it recurs, replace the valve assembly.
