Airsoft BB FAQ
Airsoft BB FAQ – Weight, Brands & Selection Guide
Answers about BB weights, brands, bio BBs, tracer BBs, and how to choose the right BBs for your gun.
What are bio BBs and should I use them?
Bio BBs are biodegradable, made from PLA (polylactic acid) instead of ABS plastic. Many outdoor fields require them for environmental reasons. They perform comparably to regular BBs but cost slightly more and have a shorter shelf life (1–2 years). Always check field requirements.
What are tracer BBs?
Tracer BBs glow in the dark when used with a tracer unit (a muzzle device with UV LEDs). They're popular for night games and add a spectacular visual effect. They cost more than standard BBs and require a compatible tracer unit.
Are more expensive BBs worth it?
Yes, to a point. Premium BBs have tighter diameter tolerances (±0.01mm), polished surfaces, and consistent weight. This translates to better accuracy and fewer jams. The difference between budget and mid-range is significant; between mid-range and premium is subtle. Avoid the cheapest BBs — they can damage your barrel.
What BB weight should I use for a sniper rifle?
Sniper rifles typically use 0.36g–0.45g BBs. Heavier weights maximize range and accuracy at distance. The exact weight depends on your gun's power — higher FPS guns can handle heavier BBs effectively.
Can I use 0.12g BBs?
0.12g BBs are very low quality, typically for spring-powered toy guns. They should never be used in gas or AEG airsoft guns — they're inaccurate, prone to shattering, and can damage precision barrels. Minimum recommended is 0.2g from a reputable brand.
How should I store BBs long-term?
Keep BBs in their sealed original packaging in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Once opened, reseal the bag or transfer to an airtight container. Properly stored BBs last 3–5 years (1–2 years for bio BBs).
What causes BBs to curve in flight?
Curving is usually caused by: (1) hop-up set too high or too low, (2) dirty inner barrel, (3) low-quality BBs with inconsistent shape, (4) wind. Clean your barrel, use quality BBs, and adjust hop-up incrementally.
Are there different BB colors and does it matter?
White is standard and easiest to track in flight. Other colors (black, green, red) exist but are harder to see, making trajectory correction difficult. For night games, tracer BBs (glow green) are popular. Color doesn't affect performance — choose white for practicality.
What's the difference between polished and unpolished BBs?
Polished BBs have smoother surfaces, reducing friction in the barrel for more consistent velocity and better accuracy. All quality BBs are polished. Unpolished or matte BBs are a sign of low quality — avoid them.
How many BBs do I need for a day of play?
For pistol-primary: 1,000–2,000 BBs. For rifle-primary: 2,000–5,000 BBs depending on play style. It's better to bring extra — running out mid-game is frustrating. Airgrix offers bulk packs up to 54,000 rounds for heavy players and teams.
Can BBs expire?
Standard ABS BBs don't truly expire but can degrade over 5+ years (surface oxidation, slight deformation). Bio BBs have a definite shelf life of 1–2 years before they start breaking down. Always check for visible defects before use, regardless of age.
What's the best BB brand?
Top-tier brands include BLS, Elite Force, and ASG for consistency and quality. Airgrix's own precision BBs are manufactured to ±0.01mm tolerance with nano-polished surfaces. Avoid no-name bulk BBs — inconsistent sizing damages barrels and ruins accuracy.
Should I wash my BBs before use?
No. Quality BBs are ready to use out of the bag. Washing can introduce moisture and remove beneficial surface coatings. If BBs appear dusty, it's a sign of low quality — switch brands rather than washing.
What's the heaviest BB I can use in a pistol?
Most GBB pistols handle up to 0.28g effectively. Beyond that, velocity drops too much for practical use. For pistols, 0.25g is the sweet spot balancing range, accuracy, and velocity.
Do BBs work differently in tightbore vs standard barrels?
Quality BBs work in both, but tightbore barrels (6.01–6.03mm) are more sensitive to BB quality. Low-quality BBs with diameter variations will jam in tightbores. If you upgrade to a tightbore, always use premium BBs.
Are ceramic BBs legal for airsoft?
Ceramic or metal BBs are not for airsoft skirmishing — they're for airguns and target shooting only. Using them against people can cause serious injury. Airsoft fields strictly require 6mm plastic BBs.
How do I know if my BBs are causing accuracy problems?
Test: shoot 10 rounds at a target from a stable rest. If groupings are wide (>15cm at 15m) despite proper hop-up adjustment, try a different BB brand. If accuracy improves dramatically, your old BBs were the problem.
What's the difference between 5.95mm and 5.96mm BBs?
This refers to the precise diameter. 5.95mm ±0.01mm is the standard for quality BBs. Tighter tolerance means more consistent performance. The difference between 5.95 and 5.96 is negligible if tolerance is tight — what matters is consistency, not the nominal size.
Can I mix different BB weights in the same magazine?
Never. Mixed weights cause unpredictable trajectories and require different hop-up settings. Always use one weight per magazine. If switching weights, re-adjust your hop-up.
Are bulk BB bags as good as bottled BBs?
Quality depends on the manufacturer, not the packaging. However, bottled BBs are better protected from moisture and physical damage during shipping. For long-term storage, bottles with sealed caps are superior to bags.
